Studies on Fear of Public Speaking
Are you experiencing fear of public speaking? If you are, then you are one of the millions around the world who have this problem. But the fear of public speaking strikes certain people harder than others and it appears in many manifestations. Studies show that people who will suffer most because of their fear are those who are more anxious. And even when it's over, it is possible for some of them to feel even more anxious instead of feeling relieved.
In the United States, the fear of public speaking is reported to be what people are most afraid of. The mere thought of speaking in front of others makes some people anxious. There are widespread reports of nervousness and stage fright in people with different personalities. However, don't think that the fear of public speaking is all negative. This is because getting keyed up actually helps people focus and achieve better attention span. Anyone who is about to make a presentation actually concentrates more just before he is about to speak and this is a good thing.
Studies conducted by various researches find a lot of surprising facts about the fear of public speaking, people with low-anxiety trait, for example, get nervous just before they speak publicly but begin to relax soon afterwards. On the other hand, people who have high anxiety traits get nervous as soon as they start speaking and their fear of public speaking only worsens as they go on with their presentation.
That is the reason why you will hear a lot of speakers comment that they were anxious at the beginning of the presentation but in the end, they finished properly and they wish they had more time. Researches say that when this happens, the speaker had already habituated and have gotten used to speaking in front of an audience. Meanwhile, the low-anxiety people focus on the unpleasant; they think that "Oh no, I have to make this speck," and that "my hands are already trembling." They are into the public speaking experience but instead of using it positively, they react negatively. Because of this low anxiety people are called habituaters whilst high anxiety people are called sensitisers.
But the bad news for sensitisers is that they cannot change their trait as it is not really a part of their personality. You cannot be a high-anxiety person today and be a low-anxiety person tomorrow.
However, there are ways to get around this fear of public speaking problem. So before speaking, they should prepare themselves for the presentation by visualising themselves in front of the room and having a successful outcome. Practice can also help you overcome your fear of public speaking.
The fear of public speaking is not something you should be ashamed of because it simply makes you human. If you are embarrassed about the symptoms of your fear, then you should do something about it. There are techniques you can utilise so you can control your fear of public speaking and become a good speaker.
