5 Factors to Keep in Mind While Choosing Presentation Training Courses

Oddly enough, presentation training courses are increasingly important in a world that is quickly becoming more isolated in its socialization trends. People are spending more and more time sitting at their computer and less and less time interacting with other people. Since maintaining good presentation skills requires giving presentations on a somewhat regular basis, presentation training courses are available to suit any skill level of presenter. As you go about finding the right course for you consider a few of these ideas.

General v. specific types of presentations

There are many types of presentations that can be given. Some involve making a toast while others require speaking about facts and figures. Still others require working around media equipment or differing props. You might think that one size fits all when looking for presentation training courses when, in reality, you will likely need a general course combined with a bit more specific course. One course will help with speaking, nerves and mannerisms while the next can help with integrating another aspect of the presentation. Look for an organization that offers several forms of presentation classes related to what you may need.

Experienced staff/teachers

Check out the staff of the organization that is providing the presentation training courses. Are they teachers that tend to work primarily in the classroom or have they been out on the road in business oriented situations. One is not necessarily better then the other, excepting that the “on the road” presenters may have a bit different real world application that applies better to your needs.

Practice time

Regardless of all other aspects of presentation training courses, make sure that the courses you are involved in incorporate a good opportunity to practice in front of an audience. You are likely to hear about this in class and become nervous about it but this is why you are in the class to begin with. Facing your fear is the only way to become better. If a majority of time is not dedicated toward practice time you may want to look elsewhere.

Immediate Feedback

Make sure that the courses that you are involved with also incorporate a feedback period right after your presentation. Immediate feedback is why you are there. Ask some other participants, that may have taken the class before, and make sure that the teachers and others giving feedback are direct and positive with their feed back.

Multi-media and practice time

In today’s electronic age all presentation training courses should have a separate course involving media presentations. Web conferences and Power Point presentations are becoming the standard. Be sure to ask about these classes as one of your first questions.

Practice time

As referenced above, presentation training courses of any kind are a good ones because they give you the opportunity to practice the craft. Often, however, they are fairly ridged in their schedules. Seek out organizations that offer the opportunity to give a talk with a critique afterwards. Toast Masters International is one of the leading groups while most localities have civic groups that are always are on the lookout for presentations. In the end, however, you need to be the one that takes the first step in finding presentation training courses that fit your needs.
