Tips in Conquering the Fear of Public Speaking

An Effective Way to Stop Fear of Public Speaking

It is alright to have the fear of public speaking because everyone experiences this at one point or another. But it no longer becomes all right when you let this emotion become overwhelming. You see it during presentations, students suddenly speechless during an important speech or executives who stutter when he is asked about complex questions. The fear of public speaking is democratic, anyone young or old, rich or poor, experiences it.

One effective way to quickly overcome the fear of public speaking is to be afraid of being onstage but start speaking anyway. It may seem a little out of the ordinary because nobody wants to stutter at his first sentence, but it will work. This is most likely the most reliable method of gaining confidence whilst on stage because you can expect that you will begin to relax after the first few sentences.

You will be afraid, nervous, and hesitant but the important thing is for you to speak and to start speaking right away. During the first few times you try this attempt, it may not produce the kind of outcome you want so make it a goal to just do it and finish the presentation on these occasions. As you go on, you will realise that the fear of public speaking is unfounded after all. You will become good in speaking because of the experience you had and the confidence you've built up.

Reasons Why People Have Fear of Public Speaking

Probably the most common reason why people have a fear of public speaking is because they expect too much from themselves. They are afraid to fail and make a spectacle of themselves. But one thing they should realise about public speaking is that a mistake in this endeavor is not lethal. Even if you fail at your first attempt, it will not kill you. And if this worst case scenario happens, you should try your best to learn from it. You should never let it traumatise you.

Also, everyone has his own style in speaking so don't try to compare yourself with another speaker or try to replicate his style. You will simply be disappointed if his style is not in tune with yours. You can discover your own unique style as you go by and by learning this; you can effectively reach out to the audience.

Think of a toddler, the best way he learned to walk was through trying it by himself. By stumbling and falling, he will soon get it right. In the same way, you can conquer the fear of public speaking through experience and perseverance. It may not be easy especially when your throat is dry and your hands are clammy but take comfort in the fact that thousands of other people have experienced this as well. And most of the time, people who did not give up conquered their fear of public speaking to become incredibly successful speakers later on.
