Hidden Reasons Why People Have Fear of Public Speaking

Have you ever wondered why there are so many establishments that teach people how to get rid of their fear of public speaking? Well, probably the basic reason for this is because there are people who inherently have low self-confidence. They fear that people will not listen to them or they think that they will most likely make a mistake when they are at the center of attention. And because they have so much fear of public speaking; they become nervous and these things happen.

Meanwhile, there are also a lot of misconceptions that causes fear of public speaking which further stresses a nervous individual; among these include:

  1. Believing that you need to be a brilliant speaker – there is no need to be, all you need to be when you are in front of hundreds or thousands of people is be yourself. You should also use humanity and a sense of humour so that people will relate to what you have to say.

  2. Thinking that you need to impart as much information as possible – in a limited timeframe. It is recommended for you to stick to the key points and repeat these key concepts. Trying to teach people too much in such a short period of time will not impart anything to them and increase your fear of public speaking.

  3. Trying to please everyone – this is not only unrealistic, it is impossible. You can expect that there will be people who disagree or who becomes bored with your presentation; there are always those kinds of people even when the most brilliant speaker is speaking.

  4. Trying too hard to emulate others – you might be impressed with how another speaker handles himself, but to get rid of your fear of public speaking, you must become comfortable in front of the audience by finding your own style.

  5. Failing to reveal anything about yourself – being open to the audience while you are speaking in front will let them feel as if they know you. Have you noticed that the most effective speakers always make it a point to say something about themselves?

  6. Becoming fearful of negative outcomes – this is probably one of the root causes of fear of public speaking. Every person wants to be liked but you should get this fear out of your mind to become an effective speaker.

  7. Trying to control uncontrollable aspects – believe it or not, some speakers try to control their audience, this is almost impossible since everyone has different things going on in his mind.

Fear of public speaking can be a natural emotion and it is only to be expected especially if you are an introvert. However, there is no need to worry because there are various techniques that will teach you how to conquer fear of public speaking. Every person experiences fear of public speaking at one point in their lives but through practice and perseverance, you can become a great public speaker that will be emulated by others.
