The Fear of Public Speaking from a CEO's perspective
CEO’s or Chief Executive Officers, the heads of modern man’s corporations, will always have that fear of public speaking in different degrees. The fear of public speaking is common for most or even all CEO’s for many different reasons. As CEO’s of a company, you are basically responsible for everything. You are responsible for finances, marketing the products or services, the day to day operations, and even the slight human resource issues as well. If something goes wrong and you are asked to make a public statement about the company then it is normal to be afraid, even just a little. If your products aren’t spectacular and you have to talk to customers then there will always be some insecurity or fear within you.
CEO’s are always under the spotlight. Everyone will be looking at you if you are a CEO of a company. The larger the company means the more eyes are on you. The board of directors will always be watching the CEO’s performance. Head hunters are always waiting for the CEO’s next career move. Employees expect leadership and dedication from their CEO. You shouldn’t be surprised if being a CEO is one of the most stressful jobs in the world. All eyes are on you and the only thing you can do is stay calm under pressure.
The fear of public speaking for the CEO is natural. This fear may be really intense or this fear may be negligible. Whatever the case, fear is existent when the CEO makes a public speech. There is always uncertainty when you face people. There is always ambiguity in the reaction of the public to what you say. Reactions may be positive and they may be negative. All of these things are running through the head of the CEO and it is but natural for the CEO to have some sort of fear within.
If you are on your way up the corporate ladder and assuming everything goes as planned then you may be a CEO of a company in the future as well. As you go up the corporate ladder, you will experience the stress from your subordinates and the stress from your superior’s eyes. You will be watched. Everyone will be looking at you. You’ll have to get used to this if you want to become a CEO one day. If you can not handle the stress then you may forget about your dreams of becoming a CEO already.
As a CEO, you will face the public. If your company is publicly listed or if it is privately owned then as a CEO, you will face the public no matter what. You will face clients. You will face customers. You will face the government. If you can not be poised as a CEO in front of all these people then you’ll have to find someone else to take your place. As a CEO, you have to step up and conquer the fear of public speaking. You have to rise to the occasion and manage your fear of public speaking whenever needed.
