Techniques to Overcome Fear of Public Speaking

Whether you are a college student or a business executive, you might have encountered the emotion of fear of public speaking at one time or another. So the question is, how can you overcome this fear to become as effective as you could be? The first thing you should realise that the fear of public speaking does not lay anywhere else but in your own mind. Changing your mindset about this can certainly help you overcome the fear of public speaking.

A great tip to relax whilst giving a speech or a presentation in front of people is to take a deep breath. Do this before going to the podium because it significantly helps reduce the tension in your body. It lowers your blood pressure and it can also help clear up your mind. After this, you can simply go ahead and go to the podium. Don't think about your fear of public speaking; just react by giving the speech right away. You will discover that it is not really as scary as it seems.

Another tip is to prepare before the speech because it can help calm down your fear of public speaking. But don't go overboard because it can do more harm than good. So prepare all your documents, your speech, and even practice your facial expressions. These tricks will help you become more comfortable as you have already seen what you looked like whilst delivering the speech. It is also recommended for you to make the note cards easy to read as it would be a good idea to take precautions and have backup in case your fear of public speaking becomes overwhelming that you forgot what you have to say.

But if you would be speaking to an audience a lot of times, it might be a good idea for you to enroll in the public speaking class at the local university or other establishments that offer this service. Most public speaking classes can accommodate your schedule so you don't need to worry about missing class or becoming absent from work. Remember that it is important for you to choose a class where there are a limited number of people. This will help you relax and develop a relationship with other people to get rid of your fear of public speaking; the atmosphere will be comfortable for you so you can communicate and learn better as well.

However, no matter how prepared you are, mistakes are sometimes unavoidable. But don't let the fear of public speaking get the better of you. So what will you do when you lost your note cards or if you suddenly decide that you cannot do it anymore? Well, probably the best thing you can do in this case is just to finish the presentation. Go to the main point immediately, try to calm your fear of public speaking, and finish the whole speech as gracefully as possible. If you don't let the fear of public speaking become overwhelming, you might find that speaking in public may actually be enjoyable.
